Years ago, I had a friend who was always telling me that I needed a slow cooker. I used to think, “It sounds useful, but do I really need a slow cooker?” To show willing, I did a bit of research and, I must admit, I liked what I read! It sounded as if a slow cooker would save me time and money while giving my family a tasty, nutritious meal at the end of the day. And only one pan to wash! In fact, it sounded so good that I gave in and bought one and, guess what, now I’m the one telling my friends that they need a slow cooker!
Now that the nights are drawing in, there’s nothing better than coming home after a long day at work to a healthy, piping hot meal that can be served and eaten straight away. All it takes is a little time in the morning to prepare the ingredients, add them to the slow cooker and set the required temperature and time. Then you’re free to get on with your day while your slow cooker gets on with the job of cooking that night’s dinner!
And it gets better! Did you know that a slow cooker can save you money in, not just one, but two ways? Firstly, it uses only a very small amount of electricity compared to a standard oven and, secondly, it allows you to use cheaper cuts of meat because they become deliciously tender after a long, slow cook.
Top tip: if you’re looking for cheaper cuts in the supermarket, note that they’re often packaged together and labelled ‘braising steak’.
Even celebrity chefs love using a slow cooker and they all have their own clever little tricks for making slow-cooked meals taste amazing – click here to see their slow cooker top tips and learn to slow cook like a pro. From stroganoff and lasagne to soups, stews, curries and even porridge, there’s something for everyone and there are hundreds of great recipes out there for you to try.
