Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits

16 September 2021

Baking enthusiast and new puppy owner Jo from the Slummy Single Mummy blog shares her fun and easy recipe for scrumptious homemade treats...

Baking can be a lot of fun - it’s therapeutic, relaxing, plus you get a cake at the end! What’s not to love about that? Have you ever thought about baking something for your pets though? Humans aren’t the only ones who can enjoy the fruits of your labour - now your dog can get in on the action with these homemade peanut butter dog biscuits.

Making your own dog treats has lots of advantages. First up, it’s often cheaper - shop bought dog treats can be expensive for small quantities, whereas making your own treats for your pup can often be very cost effective, especially if you bake in bulk (you can always freeze in batches).

The other benefit of homemade dog treats is that you know exactly what’s gone into them. You don’t have to worry about any added nasties, and you can customise your recipe to suit your own pet’s specific dietary requirements.

Ingredients

To make your own dog biscuits flavoured with peanut butter - always a pup favourite - you will need:

  • 2.5 cups of wholewheat flour or oat flour. You can make your own oat flour simply by popping regular oats in a food processor or blender.
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup of smooth peanut butter (go for a good quality one with as few added ingredients as possible)
  • 1 cup of water
  • 2 tablespoons of honey

Method

  • Preheat your oven to 170 degrees celsius and lightly grease a baking sheet. In a large bowl, combine all of your ingredients, adding the water gradually and mixing with your hands until you have a firm dough. Roll out on a floured surface and cut into shapes. You can just cut out squares or cookie shapes, or you could get creative with mini alphabet cutters or heart shapes.
  • Transfer your homemade dog biscuits to your baking sheet and bake for around 20 minutes. Transfer to a wire cooling rack and leave to cool completely.

Your homemade peanut butter dog treats are now ready for your dog to enjoy!
